Following his maiden regular Staysure Tour appearance in France two weeks ago, Paul Lawrie returns to British soil as he tees it up at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship hosted by Ian Woosnam from June 21-23.
The Scotsman fired a final round of 66 to finish in a share of 13th place at the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde and will be aiming to maintain his momentum when the Staysure Tour visits Trevose Golf & Country Club.
It will be the first time that the Cornish links has hosted a European Tour-sanctioned event, as the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship makes its debut on the Staysure Tour International Schedule.
With rolling fairways and spectacular scenery set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, Lawrie cannot wait to rekindle his passion of links golf when the action gets under way.
“The views at Trevose are unbelievable, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of great reports about the course and everyone raves about how good it is, so I’m excited to get out and play.
“I had over a year without playing, so I’m still trying to find my feet a little bit, but hopefully we can crack on this week and try and get in contention.”
Lawrie turned 50 years old at the beginning of the year and will play his third consecutive Staysure Tour event following his T13 in France and his over-50s debut at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in May.
The 1999 Open Champion is one of 11 former Ryder Cup players teeing it up at Trevose Golf & Country Club as a star-studded field battle it out for the inaugural Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship title.
“It doesn’t matter what level you’re playing at these boys are competitive,” he said.
“I spoke to Monty and Darren Clarke and they were raving about how good the quality is. I knew what the situation was going to be, and I have taken a bit of time to get up to speed but I feel better week on week. Hopefully this week will be another step closer to winning.”
The Scot, who played twice on the European Tour in Oman and Qatar at the start of the season, has enjoyed his time on the over-50s circuit so far, especially catching up with familiar faces from yesteryear.
“I’ve had a quick chat in the Players Lounge with Mike McLean, who I haven’t seen for 20 years, and it was nice to catch up and see some guys you haven’t seen for a long time,” he said.
“Some of the guys who are around my age I have seen quite regularly, but there are some guys who are a bit older and it’s great to see them.
“I played with Mark Davies in France two weeks ago and we hadn’t played together for at least 20 years. It’s the guys you used to spend time with when we played on the European Tour, and it’s nice to spend time with them again.”
Lawrie will begin his first round at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship at 10:54am local time.
