Won the Australian Junior Championship and the New Zealand Amateur Championship in 1986, turning professional the following year. Finished as runner-up to Mark James in his first European Tour event and went on to win three titles. His most famous victory was his Scottish Open win, when he played the last five holes in seven under par to snatch victory from home favourite Colin Montgomerie.
