Italy’s Renato Paratore has been named the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month for June, after enhancing his reputation as one of golf’s rising stars with his maiden European Tour victory in the Nordea Masters.
The 20 year old became the youngest European Tour winner since his compatriot Matteo Manassero won the BMW PGA Championship in 2013, as he held off Ryder Cup stars Matthew Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood to seal a one shot victory at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club.
The former Junior Ryder Cup player started the final day a shot behind Wood and showed real guts to save par on the last three holes, signing for a 70 and an 11 under par total, which meant the Englishman needed a par on the 18th to set up a play-off.
With Paratore following on TV, Wood hit a ragged tee-shot into the trees and recorded a bogey to finish at 10 under par alongside defending champion Fitzpatrick, who had earlier birdied the last to set the clubhouse target.
As the recipient of the Hilton Golfer of the Month Award for June, Paratore will receive an automatic upgrade to Diamond Status on Hilton Honors, Hilton’s award-winning loyalty program.
“I am really happy to be awarded the Hilton Golfer of the Month for June,” said Paratore, who earned entry to this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational courtesy of his win.
“The win in Sweden was the best moment of my career and has really changed things for me.
“To be a European Tour winner for the first time is really special and I hope to win many more in my career. This award is just an extra bonus and it caps off a great summer for me so I must thank Hilton and the people who voted for me.”
Paratore was chosen by a panel comprising members of the golfing media as the recipient of the monthly award ahead of South African Dylan Frittelli, who also sealed his maiden European Tour title in the Lyoness Open powered by ORGANIC+. England’s Tommy Fleetwood completed the top three, after a stellar performance at Erin Hills Golf Club saw him take fourth place in just his second appearance in the U.S. Open.
Martin Dempster, Golf Writer for the Scotsman newspaper, said: “June was yet another month of exceptional performances on the European Tour. The exploits of Dylan Frittelli, who won his first European Tour title at the Lyoness Open, Andres Romero, winner of the BMW International Open, and Tommy Fleetwood, who announced his arrival on the world stage with a fourth place finish at the U.S. Open, were outstanding in their own right.
“But Renato Paratore’s brilliant maiden victory at the Nordea Masters - during which he held off two Ryder Cup stars, Matt Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood, by a single shot to become a European Tour winner for the first time at the age of 20 - was an incredible achievement and one fully deserving of the Hilton Golfer of the Month Award.”
Hilton, the Official Hotel Supplier to the European Tour, is the Official Sponsor of the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month award, which recognises and rewards the best performances of European Tour members each month.
